Understanding and interpreting nutrition information on food labels

This learning module focuses on the role of food labelling in helping people select healthy foods and understand the effect their choices have on their and their familys nutrition. How healthcare professionals, as part of their health promotion role to reduce incidences of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers for example, can help patients understand and interpret food labels better is addressed.

Intended learning outcomes

This learning module for nurses focuses on the use of food labelling as a means to bring awareness in people about the food choices they make, with the aim of promoting healthy eating and healthy living.

  • Understand the basis of nutrition and health claims.
  • Integrate information on food labels into general healthy eating advice for patients.
  • Recognise the importance of allergen information and consider how the information on food labels can be best used to manage certain conditions.
