This learning module examines stoma formation to manage certain diseases and as a result of surgery to the gastrointestinal or urinary tract. It focuses on the signs, symptoms and management of peristomal skin complications but also addresses how having a stoma can affect individual's physical, psychological and social functioning. Management and teaching patients to self-care for the stoma are also described.
