Diagnosis and management of patients with pleural effusions

Author: Rebecca Myatt

Duration: 2 hours Last updated: 2019 Quality Assurance: Peer-reviewed Level: Qualified nurses, Students Language: English

Course description

Pleural effusions develop as a result of an imbalance between fluid formation and re-absorption in the pleural space (Hooper et al 2010). This can be a benign indication of cardiopulmonary disease or may occur as a result of a malignant process. The most common causes of pleural effusion in adults are heart failure, malignancy, pneumonia, tuberculosis and pulmonary embolism (Light 2002). This module aims to discuss the causes and treatment of pleural effusions and highlights the role of the nurse.
