This learning module reviews research on the barriers to and predictors of antiretroviral (ART) adherence and the efficacy of interventions to promote successful long-term therapy, for example, for HIV. The adverse side effects of treatment, complicated regimens, lack of social support and co-morbid mental health disorders are discussed, as are continuity of care and trusting relationships between service users and healthcare providers.
