Course description

This module aims to provide nurses in all areas of practice with information on the care of people living with, or affected by, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). It aims to assist nurses to understand how onward transmission of HIV can be prevented, and enhance their understanding of the professional and ethical issues they may experience when caring for people living with HIV.

Learning aims and intended outcomes

  • Understand the current preferred terminology in relation to HIV and AIDS, and which terms to avoid using
  • Discuss the role of nurses in supporting early diagnosis, testing and treatment of HIV
  • Outline the main strategies for preventing onward transmission of HIV
  • Understand the importance of challenging all forms of stigma and discrimination directed at people affected by, or living with, HIV
  • Recognise the importance of a holistic approach when caring for, and meeting the individual needs of, people living with HIV
