  • Learning time: 20 mins
  • Last updated: 2022
  • Link to RCNi Revalidation Portfolio

Monitoring or recording an electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most common investigations carried out in clinical practice or as part of a health review. All nurses and healthcare practitioners should have a basic understanding of electrocardiography technique and the interpretation of an ECG trace.

This module aims to help you recognise sinus rhythm on an ECG to ensure you understand this essential clinical skill and practise competently.

What will you learn?

  • How a normal heart works and the principle of cardiac depolarisation
  • What sinus rhythm is and how it appears on an ECG trace
  • How to recognise the components of the ECG complex
  • The purpose of a 12-lead ECG and its clinical benefits.
