Course description
This module will provide an overview of patient group directions (PGDs) and their place in the supply and administration of medicines in the UK. It aims to raise awareness of best practice recommendations, with specific reference to guidance produced by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (2017a) and other evidence-based literature.
Learning aims and intended outcomes
- Explain the difference between a prescription, a patient-specific direction (PSD) and a PGD
- Describe the process developing a PGD, the information that should be included, and how PGDs are authorised
- Identify the healthcare professionals eligible to use PGDs
- Discuss the medicines that can be included in a PGD
- Discuss the competent and safe use of PGDs and the importance of the review process
