This learning module reviews the management of primary hypertension in adults, with reference to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines.

Intended learning outcomes

After completing this CPD learning module and completing the time out activities nurses should be able to:

  • Explain how hypertension is diagnosed, blood pressure is monitored and blood pressure targets are defined.
  • List the contributory factors and risks associated with hypertension.
  • Discuss antihypertensive drug treatment.
  • Describe a patient education programme, including support for healthy lifestyle choices and medicine adherence, for the management of hypertension.
