Course description

The aim of this module is to increase your awareness of some of the intersectional health inequities experienced by people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender + (LGBT+). It aims to enhance understanding of some of the issues experienced by people in this community in relation to various physical and mental health conditions and services, and looks at the steps nurses can take to improve care for this group of people.


Learning aims and intended outcomes

After completing this module and the time out activities, you should be able to:

  • Recognise that LGBT+ people have suboptimal health outcomes and experiences of health and social care services.
  • Explain the concept of intersectionality.
  • Define the main terms used by LGBT+ people to identify and express themselves.
  • Discuss some of the sexual health concerns and lifestyle-related issues experienced by LGBT+ people.
  • Recognise the concept of minority stress in the context of the mental health of those in the LGBT+ community.
  • Describe some of the health and social care challenges experienced by older LGBT+ people.
