This learning module clarifies the differences between hallucinations and delusions even though they are often experienced together. The possible causes of hallucinations are summarised and the advice that should be given to patients is discussed. The module, written for nurses in general practice rather than mental health care, outlines precepts that can guide their response to a patient presenting with auditory, visual or other hallucinations for the first time.
