Course description

This learning module looks at the symptoms and treatments of the menopause and its implications for women's health and well-being. The menopause can be an unsettling and distressing time, affecting women's well-being, mental health, sexuality, relationships and work. Nurses working in primary care are in a prime position to support women to understand the menopause and offer advice about treatments and lifestyle strategies.


Learning aims and intended outcomes

After completing this module and the time out activities you should be able to:

  • Describe the physiological processes that occur during the menopause.
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of the menopause.
  • Explain the long-term health risks posed by decreased oestrogen levels and whether and how these can be mitigated.
  • Summarise the different approaches that can support women undergoing the menopause, including lifestyle strategies, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), non-hormonal medicines and alternative treatments
  • Critically review the different types of HRT.
