This learning module looks at the prevalence of hip fractures and associated problems. It highlights the importance of effective pain management and explores the use of local anaesthetics for pain that is unresponsive to traditional analgesics. The use of femoral nerve blocks in the pre-operative period, to relieve severe pain in patients waiting for surgery, is discussed, as is physical assessment and moving a patient to provide essential nursing care.

Please note that information provided by RCNi Learning is not sufficient to ensure competence in the skill. Assessment of competence should take place in line with local practice.
